The Cook Islands is a collection of 15 islands in the South Pacific spread over a vast area, half of which are tiny isolated lagoon atolls.
Rarotonga is the largest Cook Island with a land mass of only 26 sq. miles and a population of just under 10,000, about half the total population. Rarotonga has most of the accommodation and many tourists stay here for their entire holiday.
Aitutaki, a stunning lagoon island, is a 45-minute flight to the north of Rarotonga, and is the second most visited island. Day trips to Aitutaki are popular but exhausting and it is strongly recommended to spend at least one night on the island.
